Each year the nominations for the Academy Awards are announced, and each year I have only seen, like, one of the films. Not this year, my friends. This year I have seen five of the films nominated for Best Film (La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, Lion, Arrival, and Hidden Figures), as well as three of the films nominated for Best Animated Film (Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, and Zootopia), plus a couple other miscellaneous films (Doctor Strange, Star Trek Beyond). And I’m hoping I can squeeze in a couple more before February 26th.
I have to say, while I’m pleased that I saw more of the nominated films this year, it was easier to root for a winner when I had only seen one. Now I’m not sure which one to root for!
The first time I watched the Oscars was in college with my girlfriends. We claimed our dorm’s common area ahead of time with a post-it posted to the TV screen, threatening retribution to anyone who dared to cross us. We baked our friend’s mom’s famous lemon poppy-seed bundt cake, and it was divine. Food and the Oscars are meant to be together.
One way to make the Oscars really fun is with themed food. Whether it’s themed after specific films that are nominated, or just in the spirit of the Oscars, it really makes watching an hours-long show feel like a party. And don’t feel like you need a large group of friends to make this fun. I’ll fully admit that I have done this even when it’s just little ol’ me.
My friend Emily and I will be watching the awards together this year, and we came up with some good ideas:
Other great ideas include anything seafood (crab cakes, shrimp cocktail), watermelon Jolly Ranchers, beer and fried chicken inspired by Sebastian’s club in La La Land, samosas, and chocolate-covered espresso beans. I also love to make star-shaped cheese slices using a star-shaped mini cookie cutter. They’re adorable and the perfect size for crackers.
To make the party even more fun, fill out an Oscars ballot and see if your choices are the big winners!

Hell or High Water-melon Vodka Cocktails
3oz Pinnacle Cucumber Watermelon Vodka
4oz watermelon puree mix (I used Finest Call brand, found at the liquor store)
4oz sparkling water (whatever you have on hand, I used La Croix coconut)
splash of lime juice
~5 mint leaves
1. Add the vodka, watermelon puree mix, mint leaves, and lime juice to a shaker filled about halfway with ice. Shake well (about 10 seconds).
Tip: If you don’t own a martini shaker, a shaker cup (like the kind for protein shakes) can be used instead!
2. Add sparkling water to shaker. Shake once or twice to mix, but do not over shake as you will lose the carbonation.
3. Pour into a glass filled halfway with ice and garnish with mint. Enjoy!
